Fudge3d vs Hunyuan3D
Fudge3d packages generation, texturing, remeshing and viewing into a desktop application. Hunyuan3D 2.1 is an openly released model ecosystem for users prepared to assemble and maintain their own local stack.

What an open release gives you
Openly published models offer real advantages, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest:
Openness
The weights are available to study, adapt and fine-tune. Fudge3d is closed source and offers no equivalent.
No subscription fee
Self-hosting shifts cost to hardware, setup and maintenance, subject to the community licence.
Deployment flexibility
Self-host it, script it into your own service, or use the hosted engine – your choice. Fudge3d runs in exactly one place: the desktop it is installed on.
Active research lineage
It is developed and published openly, with the pace and transparency that brings. A closed commercial product ships on its own schedule.
Licence, platform and assembly
Both can keep generation on hardware you control. What differs is the licence you accept, the operating system you need, and how much of the workflow arrives already built.
| Dimension | Hunyuan3D | Fudge3d |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An openly released 3D generation model family from Tencent, with a separate closed hosted engine alongside it | A commercial app for Windows 10/11 and macOS on Apple Silicon |
| Licence | A community licence rather than a standard open-source one. Published terms have excluded the EU, the UK and South Korea, required a separate licence above a monthly-active-user threshold, and forbidden using outputs to train other models | A straightforward commercial licence: you own everything you generate on both tiers, commercially, with no attribution |
| Operating system | The official Hunyuan3D 2.1 repository lists macOS, Windows and Linux | Windows 10/11 and macOS Apple Silicon |
| Getting it running | An NVIDIA GPU, a CUDA toolchain, a specific Python and PyTorch environment, custom rasterizer components and weights fetched separately | A standard installer, then generate |
| Inputs | Images. Text-to-3D is a feature of the hosted engine rather than the open release | A single image or a text prompt, both locally |
| Texture workflow | An openly released Hunyuan3D Paint pipeline for PBR texture synthesis | A packaged local AI Texture Generator for UV-mapped meshes |
| Existing meshes | The official paint pipeline accepts a mesh path and reference image | The AI Texture Generator works with supported UV-mapped meshes |
| Remeshing | Not part of the model | Local remeshing for existing models |
| Privacy | Can remain local when self-hosted; hosted implementations have their own data practices | Generation, texturing, remeshing and repainting run locally without creative-content uploads |
| Support | A public issue tracker | A commercial product with a company behind it |

Time, control, or convenience
Run the open model when
You have suitable hardware, you want to modify or fine-tune it, you are integrating generation into your own software, and the current licence terms fit your product and territory.
Choose Fudge3d when
You are on Windows or macOS, you want a finished tool rather than a starting point, you need viewing, remeshing and texturing alongside generation, or you want commercial terms you can read in a minute.
Common questions
Is this a local-versus-cloud comparison?
Not exactly. Hunyuan3D can be self-hosted on your own GPU, in which case it is as local as Fudge3d. It is also offered as a hosted engine, and using that does mean sending your input to a third party. Fudge3d only ever runs locally – there is no hosted mode to opt into or misconfigure.
Is Hunyuan3D open source?
It is openly released, but under a community licence rather than a standard open-source one. Published terms have carried real restrictions – territorial exclusions covering the EU, the UK and South Korea, a separate licence requirement above a monthly-active-user threshold, and a prohibition on using outputs to train other models. If you are building a commercial product, read the current licence carefully rather than assuming it behaves like MIT or Apache.
Why choose a paid application over an openly available model?
For the packaging, the platform support and the surrounding tools. Fudge3d installs on Windows or macOS like any other application and arrives with a viewer, remeshing and PBR texturing already wired together. Self-hosting gives you more control and no licence fee, but you assemble and maintain that workflow on Linux yourself.
Which one is more private?
Both are private when run on your own machine. The difference is that Fudge3d has no other mode – with no hosted option and no upload path, a misconfiguration cannot send your work somewhere you did not intend.
Do I still need a good GPU for Fudge3d?
Yes, for generation – the work happens on your GPU. Current confirmed Fudge3d platform support is Windows 10/11 and macOS on Apple Silicon.
One installer. Everything already wired together.
